DELHI, IT’S TIME TO BURN MORE CALORIES

Here’s your chance to practice good karma, by participating in the Donate Your Calories campaign and helping needy children by making simple lifestyle changes like avoiding sugar

- YAMINI REDDY,

We often think of charity in the form of money or giving away our old clothes and toys but most of the time we miss doing our bit to the society, as we are busy with our day-to-day lives. Forget charity, in our busy schedules, we often forget to take care of our body and ourselves. But, we have found a unique solution for such a problem.

Yes, in a first-of-its-kind initiative by Sugar Free, here is a chance, for you Delhiites to take part in a nine-week challenge, wherein you shed calories and we donate food of equal value to underprivileged children.

The Sugar Free Donate Your Calories campaign will help you to add sweetness to your lives, not just by letting you enjoy sweets without the worry of calories, but by taking all those extra calories and donating it to someone who is in real need of them. You read it right, for every pledge you make, Sugar Free promises to provide wholesome mid-day meals to underprivileged kids through our NGO Partner — Akshaya Patra.

Delhi-based nutritionist Neelanjana Singh says, “Excess of calories does no good. In fact, they are responsible for many lifestyle diseases including obesity,

PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome) and diabetes. When these calories come from a source that has no nutritive value like sugar, it is even worse. Therefore, a check on such empty calories is the first step in the process.” However, empty calories can also have a negative impact on our health. “It is best to avoid them and try to incorporate sugar substitutes and alternatives intelligently,” she adds.

Ace Kuchipudi dancer Yamini Reddy also vouches for the cause and says, “Everyone should make fitness a part of their lifestyle. As an ancient culture, Indians have always seen fitness as a wholesome approach to living a more fulfilling life. As a dancer, my fitness mantra has always been to find a good balance between healthy eating and exercising.”

“I stay away from fried sweets,” says singer Shibani Kashyap. “I make a very conscious effort to avoid sugar. For my tea and coffee, I prefer jaggery or honey. When I crave for something sweet, I choose dates (khajoor) so that I don’t feel guilty later,” she adds.

When we further asked her about her workout, she says, “I do Yoga. It a holistic way to keep myself fit and I never get bored of doing yoga. There are so many asanas that keep me healthy both physically as well mentally.” She further adds, “Donate Your Calories is a great cause and I think it very well explains that love yourself first so that you can be in a position to love others. I wish you the best my people of Delhi.” If you are wondering where to begin, here is a recipe by Chef Sanjeev Kapoor that will help you cut calories but let you indulge in your favorite

food.

These empty calories can actually have a negative impact on our health. It is best to avoid them and try to incorporate sugar substitutes and alternatives intelligently.
