Forgotten tales find a narrative in this art show
An artwork often tells a story. Some say it aloud, while others weave tales in their abstract strokes. Some of these stories take form of art at the ongoing exhibition titled The Sundry Effect: The stories we are...
The show brings forth 15 narratives including farmerrelated stories by Thukral and Tagra, climatic collapse by Vivek Vilasini, the tales of ayahs, who left India after Independence by Cathy Lane, and a hundred portraits of the Kashmiris by Veer Munshi. Also, there are stories that are highlighted in works of Gigi Scaria, based on Varanasi.
Interestingly, the stories told through artworks at this showcase, are the ones that once got shelved. The participating artists bring them back from various contexts and backgrounds.
Artist Vivek Vilasini says, “In contemporary times, we cannot ignore nature. It’s making a powerful case... In my work titled City – Fifth Investigation, I’ve created a portrait of the city of Delhi, showcasing the environmental ravage that is translated on the fragile Tibetan rice paper. It reflects upon the environmental conditions and developments happening all over the world.”
Sound installations, paintings, sculptures, photographs and film works are also part of this show.
Meena Vari, the curator, says, “This show tells micro stories of the very ordinary, like in the history books, they would say... and all sundry...
These 15 stories trail the aesthetic and political engagement of the times we are living in.”
