Considered a fruit that helps keep the doctor away, we all know that apples work well for one’s health. Over the years, the benefits of the fruit, in its various forms, have always come into research and development. Though the benefits of apple cider vinegar have being doing the rounds for a while now, it is only

recently that people have begun to experiment with it.

Experts share how apple cider vinegar acts as an excellent boost for healthy skin and hair. Dr Saiqa Ayub Mir, says, “Apple cider has benefits encompassed in it — from promising you lustrous hair and radiant skin to warding off health risks and being the ultimate aid in resolving your toughest household tasks.”

There are various reasons that make apple cider a good hair and skin care ingredient. Since apple cider is

acidic in nature, it helps to decrease the alkalinity of hair. Healthy and shiny hair always has a higher acidic pH level. Anupama Menon, nutritionist and food coach, says, “Apple cider has antimicrobial properties, which helps keep the scalp and skin healthy without any infections. It contains AHA, which exfoliates the scalp and skin keeping it clean and healthy. Cider exhibits antiinflammatory properties that helps keep dandruff away. Apple cider helps remove excess oil from the hair and skin thereby giving the right texture to it. It also keeps acne and pimples away by unplugging clogged pores.” Basically, it helps maintain a healthy scalp, strengthens hair, enhances the shine, resolves itchy scalp problems, prevents hair breakage, exfoliates, removes excess oil — leaving the hair and skin bright and healthy.

Dr Shireen Furtado says, “Apple cider vinegar is considered to have antibacterial and antifungal properties and typically used as a home remedy to help manage conditions such as skin acne and a dry scalp or dandruff. However, apple cider vinegar may not suit everyone and should be used in consultation with a dermatologist. Undiluted apple cider vinegar can be harsh on the skin and can cause burns and damage the skin. The efficacy of apple cider vinegar based hair and skin products depends on the composition and purpose of the products as the overall ingredients will differ.”

Dr Nina Madnani, a consultant dermatologist, says, “Alternative therapy has always been attractive for the nay-sayers of modern medicine, but one must remember that not all natural potions are safe or effective. The buzz about the magical cures of apple cider vinegar is not new and has been around for several decades, but surprisingly there are very few or no controlled studies of its use in humans. There is a hypothesis that apple cider vinegar has the ability to repair the skin barrier, has antifungal and antibacterial effects.”
