Ronjini Chakraborty has been part of the film industry since 2012, doing small roles in films such as Tumbbad, Simmba (both 2018) and Article 15 (2019). But she doesn’t mind the fact that she hasn’t broken into the lead heroine mode yet.

“My experience has been great. I got the opportunity to work with directors such as Anubhav Sinha and Rohit Shetty. There are times when you feel, ‘Oh no, I didn’t make it’, after an audition, but I know that I’ll get something better,” shares Ronjini.

The actor has worked in a range of genres — masala actioner, horror, social drama — and would like to show more variety. “A big-budget film or a small indie project, feeling content as an actor is my first priority,” she maintains.

Talking about whether casting in Bollywood gets a tad myopic, she says, “Of course I’ve faced it, too. Initially, I didn’t understand this business of cinema because I thought art is for art, but that’s a different debate altogether.”

She adds that she now understands it better and is working towards making herself more viable. “If you think from a producer’s point of view, drawing audiences to the theatres is a big concern. I don’t want my producer to lose money. A lot of actors say, ‘Arrey woh toh unko hi lenge’. I don’t want to be bitter about not being considered a saleable face. It’s a valid point,” she says.

While she’s yet to do a lead role in films, she has done that in plenty on the web, including her latest web series which is a rib-tickling tale on alien invasion. She says she prefers OTT platforms as “there’s no censorship”.
