The definition of masculinity is changing, says Divyendu

The world of cinema is changing and so are films in Bollywood. With films like Vicky Donor (2012), Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, and Bala (2019), the Hindi film industry is exploring stories that break the ‘hero stereotype’, feels actor Divyendu Sharma.

“In mainstream Bollywood, Ayushmann (Khurrana) is choosing such subjects, and writers are also coming up with stories where a man is shown in a real light — where a man is vulnerable,” says Sharma.

The Pyar Ka Punchnama (2011) actor believes that if we want to see a gender-neutral society, we need to stop practising toxic masculinity. “The definition of masculinity is changing, and I look at it as a positive change. With the kind of subjects that we are exploring in mainstream cinema, a dialogue has started. I mean, as a man I don’t have to prove that I’m a man, and therefore I’ll not practice the age-old toxic masculinity. I am a man, I know it. I do not have to discriminate or belittle someone to prove that, ‘main hoon asli mard’ (I am a real man). It never works,” explains the 36-year-old.

His new web film revolves around the struggle of a man after sterilisation, set around the period of Emergency (19751977). The actor believes such stories are the need of the hour. However, the manner in which they are told, needs to thought of, feels the actor. “Since our society is patriarchal, it has always been projected that a man is stronger than a woman. Therefore, there are many issues a man suffers from, which can never be discussed in public. Phir toh uske mardangi pe lalkaar hai (that would challenge his masculinity). If we want to celebrate equality, every story should be told. I am glad to be part of such stories that address these issues. These stories should be told in an entertaining manner, otherwise people will run away from such films,” adds Sharma.
