It’s humbling to be considered for good roles and films, says Sanya

Even when not facing the camera, actor Sanya Malhotra prefers working on her craft. The idea, she says, is to evolve with every film, which is why she also tries to learn from her contemporaries and seniors. But isn’t she worried about the many new talents being launched every day? Pat comes a “No”.

“What competition? I never felt any such thing,” she confesses, “Waise competition toh school mein hota tha ki kaun first aayega. Our industry requires fresh talent, and there are many who are working hard to be part of this industry, and to follow their passion. I, too, had similar dreams, so why will I have a problem with others doing the same?”

Malhotra, who made her Bollywood debut with Dangal (2016), believes that nothing else matters “when you love your job” and get an opportunity. “Who would have thought I would make this far? It’s humbling that I’m being considered for good roles and films. All these people who’re coming in are so good at their job that they inspire me. And then when I look at my work, I do get worried. Aadhe time toh yeh sochti hoon mujhse kaam ho raha hai ki nahin, aur phir apne upar kaam karne mein lag jati hoon,” she says with a laugh before opening up about the kind of films she is craving to be a part of.

Her list includes a dance film, which she rues hasn’t been offered to her till date. “Everyone knows how much I love to dance. In fact I started my journey in the industry as a dancer. Par koi mujhe approach toh kare dance film ke liye,” she sighs, but then laughs saying, “I’m thinking of approaching myself this time.” She also wants to play “a serial killer” and do a psychological thriller, to surprise people.

Not many know that Malhotra is also interested in choreography and even directed the song Sexy Baliye in Secret Superstar (2017). How about choreographing her own songs in the films she does?

“I tried that with Pataakha (2018), Vishal [Bhardwaj] ji told me to choreograph the title song. I thought it was a great idea, but then I realised that it’s difficult to be in front of the camera as well as choreograph. So, I couldn’t do it then, but may be in the future,” says the 28-year-old, who will soon be making her web debut.
