Even after 20 years, every day is a new struggle here

- Rishabh Suri

Surviving for 15 years in the cut-throat world of television isn’t easy. Mention this to actor Debina Bonnerjee, who started her career in 2005 with the TV show Mayavi, and she instead says that it has been two decades already.

“I actually started modelling at 16. I did loads of TV commercials for brands in Kolkata, and even short films with renowned directors,” says Bonnerjee, adding, “I don’t feel like I’m a top star today. Every day is a new beginning and struggle. I strive to do something fresh and interesting everyday. I don’t even look back... So much is yet to be done.”

Asked what does she consider her biggest high till date, the 36-year-old, who shot to fame with shows such as Ramayan and Chidiya Ghar, says it was her first audition, in which she raced ahead of some known names.

“Every new work project is a high for me. But my audition was the first high. I’ve only told this to my friends until now. I had gone to audition for my first TV commercial. While going in, I saw (actor) Celina Jaitly coming out, and when I was done, saw (actor) Reshmi Ghosh entering the venue. They were already pretty famous,” she recounts and adds, “I thought, ‘Oh my God, they’re also a part of this, why will I get it?’ By the time I came home, dad said there was a call for me. I had landed it! That taught me that you are never lesser than anybody. Give your best and work hard”.

Since then, she has done a variety of roles on screen. However, she refuses to name any one genre as her preferred one. “Things which don’t excite me are not my favourite. If I feel I’m getting a chance to contribute something, that makes me happy, even if it’s a small show,” Bonnerjee says.

I don’t feel like I’m a top star today. Every day is a new beginning and struggle. I strive to do something fresh and interesting everyday. I don’t even look back.
