Renuka: It’s the first step of a long journey

Justice has its own way of working. All the cases against Rhea (Chakraborty) — investigated by Narcotics Control Bureau, Enforcement Directorate and Central Bureau of Investigation — will lead to finding out what happened to Sushant (Singh Rajput)... This is the first step. It is a long journey,” says Renuka Shahane, who feels that during the investigation a “lot of things” will come out and not “just about Rhea”.

The actor-director is glad that the agencies are working without being pressurised by media channels. “I remember Jessica Lal’s and Nitish Katara’s cases, though the latter didn’t come to fruition, but the pressure from media and people worked against powerful people. Investigative journalism has the power to bring out corruption charges in high political circles, but there is a thin line between investigation and overlooking one’s privacy. Even the Supreme Court has granted human rights to accused, even after being proven guilty,” the 55-year-old says.

Shahane rues that the case has turned into a reality show. “I understand the pain and frenzy of fans, but there has to be modicum of grace while investigating. I don’t know if outing private chats are legal. I am surprised that none of the agencies have taken cognisance of the fact that privacy has been overlooked. No human rights are being upheld...,” she says. Adding that she, too, wants justice, Shahane states, “Let’s wait for the agencies to find out the truth. And, if the truth that comes out is not what the current narrative is, then it would be the saddest thing, as maybe it could be something that Sushant didn’t want made public.”
