MASTERSTROKES THAT ARE ARTISTIC TREASURES

- Naina Arora naina.arora@htdigital.in

You might not be able to travel across the world as the pandemic is still going strong, but it should not stop you from appreciating art. Bringing together 65 artworks, from private collectors across the world, is a virtual art show titled Timeless Treasures, which is going live as part of Singapore Art Week.

It includes a display of paintings, drawings, etchings and sculptures by renowned artists such as Jamini Roy, MF Husain, J Swaminathan, FN Souza, Akbar Padamsee, Jogen Chowdhury, Sakti Burman, B Prabha, to name a few.

What’s most exciting is that there are works of artists from different generations under one roof; and the one theme that connects these artists is the evolutionary journey of their lives. For instance, NS Rana, known for his bronze sculptures, says he has always believed that his work should showcase he’s an “Indian sculptor”. The 72-year-old adds, “My subjects are inspired from daily life. My forefathers also worked in bronze. Besides my education at Delhi College of Arts, I learnt a lot from my father... Main desh ki pehchaan bana ke rakhna chahta hoon.”

Saurabh Singhvi, director, Art Magnum, which organised the event in collaboration with Art Podium, says, “It was difficult to choose from such great artists... Some of the works have never been seen before!” Also participating in the exhibition is Sanjay Bhattacharyya, whose oil on canvas from his Lanterns Series takes one back in time. “We run for new things and forget the old. But with time, all new things become old... My intention is to show the beauty of old things, because, to me, all the old things have a story to tell,” he shares.
