A sustainable home with an eco-friendly touch
Summers in India are as diverse as the country itself. Inhabitants in the mountainous regions welcome the intensity of the sun while central, western and southern India are tormented by incessant heat. However, with beautiful and sustainable decor design tastes, summers ought to bring a serene touch. The magic lies in the hues, as much as in your furniture and décor accents. Summer months bring with them a yearning for blue skies, sand, grass, beaches and everything to do with the outdoors. However, the pandemic has forced us to stay in our air-conditioned rooms. It is time to make sustainability more diverse, and beautiful.
“Nature-born elements, locallysourced material palettes and repurposed pieces paint a picture of sustainability along with a tribute to genuine craftsmanship. The beauty of authentic build, rudimentary fragments and wild textures are glorified in the world of sustainability,” says interior designer Punam Kalra. The most simple way to positively impact the environment is to incorporate elements of pre-loved furniture. “Repurposed materials are the new face of sustainability. Aesthetic creations in reclaimed wood, cardboard or paper tiles give a new for their primitives,” she adds. Reclaimed wood is best seen as sideboards or seaters while paper tiles become exclusive backdrops and cardboards make stunning shelving units or modest table-top luminaires.
Praveen Rao, decor expert, feels green is one of the most underused shades in interior design and has an eternal appeal. He says, “Green is a beautiful addition in homes for summer. It tends to add a sense of continuity with the outside.”
The roots of sustainable décor go hand-in-hand with the present-day awareness of mindful décor that essentially borders on minimalism. The personal values, memories and experiences are held high in such spaces. The décor is visibly simpler and invisibly richer in experience, believes Kalra. “Upcycled décor, organic dyes and subdued colour palettes infuse the quintessential warmth and comfort in the space,” adds Kalra. She sums up the sustainable eco style as a major leap from the materialistic lifestyles to a more personal, purposeful design statement.
