Delhi-based Naamya Kapoor, 14, has etched her name in history by becoming the youngest to win a medal at ISSF Junior World Championship 2021, Lima (Peru). And winning a gold in the 25-metre pistol shooting event makes it even more special. Talking to us from Peru, the Rajouri Garden resident exclaims, “Ab toh papa ko mujhe iPhone dilana padega,” as she shared her first reaction after winning.

The ninth grader travelled 40 km (one way) daily to reach the shooting range. She says the victory is a result of a lot of hard work. “Papa arranged a car and driver for us and I would go with my mother and elder sister, Khushi (also a shooter) for practise. I’d been practising for three years. I would wake up at 6 am every day and travel to Faridabad to practise at the shooting range,” says Kapoor.

The teenager, who idolises shooter Sourabh Chaudhary, adds, “I hope I’m able to continue getting better and make my parents proud.”

Her family is waiting for the champ to return home on October 13. “Champions are not made overnight. Parents, coach aur bachche ki mehnat hoti hai,” says Parveen Kapoor, her father.
