Is Moli on indie music: There before still a long way to go it audience fully accepts

-

Composer-singer Anmol Gupta, better known as Moli, is happy with the way indie music has found a footing in the country in the past few years. The Delhibased artiste, who started his journey with the indie band, Shankara, says the music industry has undergone a change. “It’s beautiful to see the indie music scene grow after years. Back in the day of [bands] Junoon, Advaita, Indian Ocean, etc., the indie scene was still constrained. But today, it’s growing wholly and magnificently,” he says, adding, “But there still is a long way to go for the audience here [to accept the genre] and the music to expand.”

Moli recently launched the song 12 Ways I See Myself, Pt. 1,2 & 3, which has a runtime of over eight minutes. Ask him what makes an artiste stand out, and he says, “The kind of music I make is already a niche. We face problems such as how to make people understand it. But, it’s all about being authentic. The moment you pretend to be someone else, you end up just being a shadow to them... Music is a very personal take on life. The more you become real with it, the more the universe makes you stand out. Just be honest.”

For long, Indian music was synonymous to Bollywood songs, and the rest remained in the fringes. Does he see that changing now? “It’s a big change, but in a small number. I know it sounds paradoxical, but it’s true. The perception is changing, but not as a whole. Soon, we shall be there,” Moli signs off.
