Sun’s out, and so are skirts, the summer fashion staple. From pleated stunners to comfy cargos, here’s how to style the timeless classic
THE DENIM SKIRT
With the revival of Y2K fashion, we are back to the golden days of denim! A wardrobe staple that never went out of style, denim has always survived the fashion police. Celebs such as singer Rihanna, actor Kirsten Dunst, and models Elsa Hosk and Olivia Palermo have hopped on the bandwagon this season. “Known for its versatility, denim skirts can easily be teamed up with a crop top, linen shirt, high boots, jackets, etc. Low-rise or high-rise, just make sure the fit works for you,” says stylist Bharat Gupta.
THE MIDI SKIRT
Somewhere between a maxi and a miniskirt, the hybrid hemline is usually calf length or falls below your knees. Styled perfectly by actor Parineeti Chopra here, midi numbers are to watch out for. Designer Shubhika Davda says, “They are flattering on Indian body types. A pleated midi skirt with an embellished bralette and a short bomber jacket is perfect for a night out. Pair it with a crisp white shirt for workwear.”
THE CARGO SKIRT
A beautiful amalgamation of androgyny, street style and military, cargo skirts represent utilitarian fashion. These versatile, edgy, functional and comfortable apparel can be styled in a variety of ways. For a quirky look, pair it with a shirt, jumper and chunky boots like model Bella Hadid. In summers, a crop top and sneakers work well with it. For a more refined look, team it up with feminine and tailored silhouettes.
THE PLEATED SKIRT
From mini to maxi options, there are variations of this skirt reflects smart sophistication. A favourite on the runways, the apparel is replete with glamorous street style aesthetics as well. Model Emily Ratajkowski is an ardent admirer of this trend. Designer Samant Chauhan shares, “A pleated skirt is a timeless classic. Heavily influenced by the ’90s, it looks cool and can be paired with literally any type of garment.”

A wardrobe staple for every body type, the maxi skirt has a huge fan following too with the likes of actors Shraddha Kapoor, Jennifer Lopez, Kate Hudson and Rachel Brosnahan embracing it wholeheartedly. Seen here, actor Alaya F’s maxi skirt exudes simple exuberance. The ruffled crop top adds an element of drama to the whole outfit.
