PRATEEK KUHAD: I DON’T LIKE PLAYBACK SINGING, IT IS TOO MECHANICAL

- Vinay MR Mishra vinay.mishra@htdigital.in

PThe singer prefers to be instinctive with music rather than ‘technical’

rateek Kuhad has risen to fame in the independent music space, having delivered hits such as Cold/Mess, Pause, etc. But, playback singing, the singersongwriter says, isn’t his cup of tea. “I don’t like playback singing,” he tells us, adding, “I did one Bollywood song. It was exactly how they (composers) wanted it to be. I couldn’t change one note. It was too mechanical for me. I did not enjoy the process.”

The 32-year-old, who lent his vocals to Kho Gaye Hum Kahan (Baar Baar Dekho, 2016) says he is “instinctive” with music: “I sing how I feel. But, I don’t have that technical knowledge of how to change my voice and hit certain notes.

My technical skills are not that good. So, if you give me a song [for playback], I will suck at it.”

Kuhad goes on to add, “I have a good voice, but what I am really good at is writing songs. Playback singing is a skill, a creative process. You tell playback singers to sing these 10 notes in order and in a particular tone, and they know exactly how to. I can’t do that.”

The Kahaan Ho Tum singer, hence, does not have too many film projects to his credit. “I am not trying to distance myself [from Bollywood]. But, I’m not trying to chase it either. If somebody wants me to write a song for their film, it’s a respectful work experience that I expect. I have my parameters in terms of how I need to work. As long as those boxes get checked, I will do anything. I just want to make music,” he signs off.
