Sunglasses can make or break a look. Experts share tips to choose the right one for your face

If you are looking to upgrade your accessory section, sunglasses seem like the right investment, given the season. Having witnessed waves of fads, this humble accessory comes in myriad colours, sizes and forms. With options aplenty, the bigger problem lies in finding the suitable match for your face.

“As a lot of impractical styles exist today, shape of the wearer’s face always matters,” says stylist Akshay Tyagi.

While it is your confidence that makes an impression, celebrity stylist Isha Bhansali clarifies, “There are no written rules as such, but these factors help you enhance your facial features and the shape of the frames you go for. Glasses shouldn’t look too bulky or too small on you.” Because they are the first thing that people notice on your face, their placement only adds to the pressure of making the right decision. “It’s right in front of everybody’s faces, so get the right shape,” Bhansali advises.

Talking about how she uses them as an adornment on celebrities, Bhansali shares, “It’s always about enhancement. I keep their personalities in mind. If they are the type to wear an elaborate outfit, then I go simple with the shades. It really depends on the rest of the outfit, besides the structure of the face and personality.”

Whether you are looking to change up your look, amp up your style game, or are just in the mood to splurge on something new, Bhansali suggests, “Get a lot of colours; that’s a great way to amplify your look. Identify your personality and use the sunglasses to channel it.”

As is the case with accessories, you can never have too many! Moreover, what looks good on you is subjective. To help sort this out, Bhansali shares some tips. “When building a collection, start with the classics, such as wayfarers and aviators, irrespective of the gender. It’s also essential to have different shades of lenses, including light ones where your eyes are more visible.”

Take inspiration from makeup mogul Kylie Jenner and opt for rectangular, square, oversized frames for an oval or round face
If your face shape is square like actor Zendaya, go for round, curved frames as they will help soften your features
Aviators and largesized wayfarers are ideal if you have a heart-shaped (or triangular) face like actor Deepika Padukone
