Gear up to witness an evening dedicated to Mirza Ghalib’s poetry, in the Capital
Hazāroñ khvāhisheñ aisī ki har khhvāhish pe dam nikle, bahut nikle mire armān lekin phir bhī kam nikle... Fans and followers of Mirza Ghalib would recall how these verses enchanted many when actor Naseeruddin Shah portrayed the bard on TV in the ’80s show. To bring Ghalib to life then, other stalwarts who joined hands for the project were screenwriter Gulzar (director of the show) and late ghazal legend, Jagjit Singh, who provided the vocals. Marking 35 years of the televised serial, will be an upcoming event comprising music and musings propelled by Ghalib’s oeuvre.
Presented by Lutff and Prajna Foundation, the evening will have actor Neena Gupta, who acted in the serial, share anecdotes of her lived experience. “The first thing that comes to my mind when you say Mirza Ghalib is the topi of Ghalib sa’ab, jo Naseer ne bhi pehni thi. Woh ekdum chaap si chhod gayi hai,” shares Gupta, revealing, “Not many people know that when I was acting in this TV show, I was pregnant! I had to do it because I needed money, but told Gulzar sa’ab... He used to really take care of me; the dance movements were all very soft and not hectic.”
Alongside, playwright Danish Iqbal will shed light on Ghalib’s shayari and how he lived through the turbulent times. In addition, playback singer Supriya Joshi will render some of the popular ghazals that late Jagjit Singh and his wife Chitra Singh had composed for the TV show. Joshi shares, “Mirza Ghalib sa’ab ka meri life par, as an artiste, kaafi asar hua hai... During Covid time, I got a chance to watch this TV show on YouTube. I was very young when I had heard about the show, but abhi jab samajh aayi toh maine us serial ko dekha aur bahut achcha laga dekhkar ki Ghalib sa’ab ke mann mein jo hota tha woh unki kalam mein hota tha... He never said anything to impress people. I found that connect in my character as well kyunki main bhi aisi hun .... Unki sab ghazalein bahut umda likhi hui hain lekin jo ghazal mere dil ke bahut kareeb hai woh hai Hazāroñ khvāhisheñ aisī. I will sing it at the upcoming event.”
