After a long wait and speculation that no OTT platform was willing to stream The Kerala Story (2023), the Adah Sharma-starrer finally dropped on a streaming giant last month. Grateful that the project is now available for a wider audience to watch, the actor shares, “The film was banned in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, but now with social media, I am getting tagged everywhere. It’s great that through OTT, we can reach places that weren’t accessible before. The medium has created that space for us.”

When it comes to the digital medium, Sharma has had an interesting trajectory with projects such as Pati Patni Aur Panga (2020), The Holiday (2022), Commando (2023) and her latest release, Sunflower 2. Crediting OTT for allowing her to diversify as an artiste, the 31-year-old says, “OTT motivates you to do creative projects without worrying about numbers; it’s like an added advantage of the medium. As an actor, we try not to think about these things and let the producers worry. Having said that, as actors, we put in the same effort in a music video, theatrical film or an OTT release; numbers or medium won’t make us think twice.”

It is this room for experimentation that continues to draw the actor towards the web space. “I do not want to repeat myself. For example, I did the same genre in both Bastar and Commando, but the action that I did was different in both. Commando was hand-tohand combat and we were larger-than-life heroes, while Bastar was realistic, gritty and violent, as we were fighting a war. I am glad people are giving me different things to do and it should continue,” says the actor, who also got to try her hand at comedy with the Sunil Grover-starrer, Sunflower 2.

Ever since The Kerala Story released on a streaming platform, I’m being tagged everywhere on social media. It’s great that with OTT, we can reach places that we couldn’t before.
