Jamie Lever is trying very hard to move on from her image as a comedian and establish herself in showbiz. However, the actor-comedian is baffled at the industry’s tendency to put comedians in a box. Jamie, who is the daughter of comedian-actor Johnny Lever, insists that people in comedy need to be recognised as artistes and feels it is time people start taking them seriously.

“Comedians are often perceived as being limited to humorous roles, despite possessing the capability to excel in a variety of genres. It’s unfortunate that casting agencies tend to overlook the depth and range that we bring to the table, pigeonholing us into roles that solely cater to comic relief,” says the 28-year-old, who made an impression through her talents in acting, singing and dancing.

Known for her roles in Housefull 4 (2019) and Yaatris (2023), Jamie recently showcased her acting chops in the action drama Crakk and will be making her Telugu debut with Aa Okatti Adakku soon. She has also unveiled her first long format stand-up comedy show recently.

“As an actor, I strive to challenge stereotypes and explore characters that push the boundaries of my craft,” the actorcomedian explains. Jamie stresses the importance of diversity in casting and hopes the industry would start recognising the talent and potential of comedians in portraying a wide array of characters instead of being confined to stereotypes based on their previous roles or background in comedy. “With each role, I aim to break the mold and showcase the versatility of comedians in the realm of serious acting,” she ends.
