As Gudi as it gets: Be the modish mulgi, this season of new beginnings
Go for naths, jhumkas, bangles and headwear. Pin a gajra in your neat bun or fresh mongra flowers in your braided hair for the ultimate traditional look.

The spring festival of Gudi Padwa, which marks the beginning of the Marathi New Year and the harvest season, is celebrated with much gusto in and around Maharashtra. If you are in Delhi or any other part of the country and wish to partake in the festivities today, imbibe the spirit of Gudi Padwa by dressing up in a traditional outfit that reflects the essence of Maharashtrian culture. We speak to stylists about how you can ace the look:
CHANNELLING THE ‘MARATHI MULGI’ VIBE
Fashion designer Shilpi Gupta shares, “Women should opt for traditional Nauvari or Paithani sarees that highlight the cultural beauty of the state. Go for vibrant palette of reds, greens, yellows or pinks. Intricate designs and embroidery incorporating zari, gota patti or handwoven silk add to the festive ensemble. Those who are not comfortable with sarees can always opt for embroidered long jackets with ethnic pants.” For men, on the other hand, Gupta suggests a “dhoti kurta or kurta pajama with a traditional topi”.
According to Rishi Raj, a stylist and brand image consultant, the key advice is to blend tradition with personal style. He suggests:
Mix and match: two-toned saree for double the fun. Pair a Paithani saree with a bold print to add an edge.
Accessorise right: If a saree with a conventional blouse feels mainstream, style the traditional drape with a crop trop or turtleneck.
Modern drapes: You can make the drape more relaxed and bohemian, or add pleats and folds to alter the silhouette.
Footwear: Skip the basics; try block heels or embellished sneakers to combine tradition with modernity.
