fter nearly a year of teaming up for their single Kaaga, singer Sona Mohapatra and composer Ram Sampath have collaborated yet again, this time for a nonfilm single. “Ram and I have got a lot of interesting original pop music ready, but releasing music independently without a huge promo budget to drive numbers sometimes feels like throwing your hard work into a well,” Mohapatra admits.

The couple, who got married in 2005, reveals that their latest song titled Senti Ankhiyan explores the theme of eyes being the window to the soul.

“The lyrics initially stemmed from poet Roshanara Qureshi’s artistic expression in a poem she’d written on Instagram and shared with Sampath. The concept deeply resonated with us, and we reached out to her to initiate a collaboration,” she adds.

Echoing Mohapatra’s thoughts, Sampath shares, “Upon hearing Roshanara’s lyrics, I was immediately drawn to its profound message. I knew that Sona would be the perfect artiste to bring these lyrics to life.”

Mohapatra reveals that legendary Mexican artist Frida Kahlo was also a major source of inspiration behind the project. “I’ve always been inspired by her fearless spirit, art and unique fashion,” she tells us.

But it was Sampath’s vision to incorporate Kahlo’s essence into the music video. “Since my composition and music arrangement has a strong Latin American flavour, we felt it was fitting to draw inspiration from Kahlo for the visuals. The video, crafted by up-and-coming filmmaker Aroficio, promises to be a visual feast that pays homage to Kahlo’s iconic style and ethos,” he wraps up.
