Actor and Delhi University (DU) alum Jatin Sarna was recently invited as a guest speaker at Shri Ram College of Commerce’s (SRCC) dramatics society fest Histrionica, where he regaled students with tales of his acting journey and his #CampusKeDin.

‘WAS ADAMANT ABOUT NORTH CAMPUS’

The Sacred Games, Khakee: The Bihar Chapter and ’83 actor spoke of his “different kind of love” for North Campus. “So, I was very happy when SRCC called me,” says the 39-year-old, recalling that he graduated in BCom (Prog) from the School of Open Learning (SOL). “I had bad marks and had scored 54% in class XII, so no college would’ve given me admission. Had I opted for a BA course, I might have got it. But I was adamant about going to North Campus and pursuing only BCom,” he adds.

THE KHALSA DREAM

A sheepish Sarna reveals that he wanted to emulate his favourite actor, Akshay Kumar and go to Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa

College. “The memory is crystal clear. It was day one of college and I stood outside the gates. Watching students enter, I felt excited and a little bad because I hadn’t got admission. It was only later that I found that Akshay paaji went to Khalsa College in Mumbai!” laughs Sarna.

LADY IRWIN FEST WAS A FAVOURITE

I was very happy when SRCC called me, since it’s in North Campus. I have a this different love for place. JATIN SARNA, Actor

Despite this, the actor did get to live out his college dreams when he enrolled at the Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts at Mandi House after realising his love for theatre. “They (his juniors, who were members of DU college dramsocs) would discuss their nukkad nataks and stage shows and in those moments, I could gauge that energy,” he says, also recalling how he would find the Lady Irwin College fest the most happening. One incident that stays fresh in his mind is singing Jagjit Singh’s ghazal Kothe Te Aa Mahiya impromptu, after the emcee at the fest opened the stage to anyone who wanted to perform. “Maine ek tappa gaya and ran off. But the crowd clapped and hooted. All these make me miss the college experiences I did and didn’t have” he wraps up.
