9 lives have been lost due to drowning in three months
Two friends, Anil Kumar, 17, and Sunny, 16, residents of Jawahar Nagar area, left home for taking a dip in Sutlej River on Baisakhi and never came back.
Later, their bodies were fished out from the river. It is tale of apathetic approach of the district administration and the police that has failed to deter people from taking a dip in Sidhwan Canal and Sutlej River.
Despite a ban imposed by the district administration, diving and taking a dip in Sidhwan Canal and Sutlej River is going unchecked. At least nine people, mostly teenagers, have lost their lives in the canal and the river in the past three months.

Earlier in 2003, the police and the district administration posed harsh against people taking a bath in the river, when at least three persons were electrocuted as a high-tension wire fell in the river near Dugri. The police remained strict for sometime after the incident and deterred people to take bath in the river, but later the police did not give importance to the matter.
According to police commissioner Ishwar Singh, taking precautionary measures, the police have imposed a ban on swimming and diving in Sidwan Canal and Sutlej River. The police have installed hoardings along the bank of the canal and the river listing the orders issued by the police about the ban on swimming and diving. The police also conduct patrolling along the banks of the river and the canal to deter people from swimming and diving.
