The employees of the Municipal Corporation and the residents of the city are yet to reap the benefits of computerisation. Reportedly, there has been loss of data and documents due to shortage of computers. While the MC has more than 2000 employees, it has less than 100 computers at its disposal. Sources say that the top MC officials use most of these computers.

There was a proposal by the state government to put all departments, including municipalities, under e-governance. However, the proposal has not taken off well for the MC of Ludhiana.

An MC employee said that it took a lot of time and effort to maintain and upgrade the data manually. “It will be easier if the data is computersied. It will save botheration to the employees and the public while saving paper too,” he said. Sources said that the residents have filed a lot of complaints regarding the loss of data, which too get buried under piles of files. “Many a time the department concerned claims that it has lost the complaint letter,” added the sources.

Joint commissioner of MC, Ludhiana, AS Sekhon, said that the civic body ministry brought in the proposal of computerisation last year. “However, the process has not been worked out due to some reasons,” he added.
