‘Bookie’ does the dis­ap­pear­ing act, with help of tech­nol­ogy

A tech­nol­ogy-savvy man gave the cops the slip late Fri­day night af­ter he saw a po­lice team en­ter­ing his house on the screen of a close-cir­cuit cam­era in­stalled at the main gate of his house.

The po­lice had raided the house of Jaspreet Singh (35) in Ur­ban Es­tate Phase-1, Du­gri, fol­low­ing a tip-off that he was ac­cept­ing bets on the match be­tween In­dia and Aus­tralia. “We car­ried out a raid. But he had es­caped,” Du­gri po­lice sta­tion house of­fi­cer (SHO) Satwinder Singh said.

The po­lice have re­cov­ered five mo­bile phones, a lap­top, close-cir­cuit tele­vi­sion (CCTV) sys­tem, Rs 11,000 in cash and a car from the. “We have reg­is­tered a case un­der the Gam­bling Act,” he said.

Jaspreet is a prop­erty dealer by pro­fes­sion. But, ac­cord­ing to the po­lice, he used to ac­cept bets on cricket matches at the ground floor of his house. “It seemed he was pre­pared for the raid,” the SHO added.

“He had in­stalled CCTVs at the main gate of his house and es­caped form the back­door.,” the SHO said, adding that the ac­cused man­aged to flee much be­fore the po­lice gained ac­cess to his house.
