The astonishing thing about the Camry has to be the price — and it’s not a pleasant surprise. At lakh, it is the most expensive saloon in its class. Stretch a bit and a BMW 3 series, Audi A4 or Mercedes C Class are actually attainable. A diesel variant would have made a terrific proposition at that price. But petrol?
Price apart, the Camry does not set the benchmark either on looks, driveability or creature comfort. Where it scores is on Toyota’s famous durability factor. But it is debatable how many people actually buy cars for keeps in this segment. If you want a decently equipped trouble-free executive saloon and don’t mind dishing out a few lakh rupees extra, it is difficult to fault Camry. But there may not be too many like you.
