Panjab University online roll numbers leave many in a fix
Panjab University's decision to allow its students to download their roll numbers from PU website in case they don't receive these before exams has not gone down well with certain quarters which claim that the whole system is prone to manipulation.
The downloaded roll numbers are without photos of candidates, who are supposed to affix the same and get the downloaded roll number card attested.
"This move seems to be making the whole procedure more cumbersome. Why can't university website have roll numbers with scanned pictures of students? This seems to be an open invitation to unscrupulous students to indulge in impersonation. There is hardly any check especially at exam centres in rural areas," a senior faculty member from the PU told Hindustan Times.
University students too felt that the move was not serving the purpose.

Anoop Sharma, an MA student, said, "Technology is available and all we have to do is to put it to use in the best possible manner. Why can't we have roll numbers downloaded from the website along with photos of students and some unique identification number without which students' roll number cannot be downloaded."
On the other hand, PU controller of examination (CoI) Dr Parvinder Singh said that all the exam centres would be provided data of students appearing there.
"The centre superintendents can cross- check the downloaded roll number of students with the data available

FACULT Y MEMBER with them to ensure that no impersonator appears in the exams," Dr Parvinder Singh said.
The CoI said that all examination centres had been given directions that such downloaded roll numbers should not be accepted till the time they were attested and were produced along with photo ID card of the student.
Dr Parvinder Singh said that students could download the roll numbers only after filling in their personal details on the website, like their parents' names and classes. He said that the system had definitely brought down the number of inquiries as well as students queuing up at the PU to get their roll numbers.
