HT Ludhiana Live - - Front Page - HT Live Correspondent ludhiana@hindustan LUDHIANA:

A court bailiff ( an employee) barged into a woman's house and molested her, and in a repetition of the Tarn Taran episode, the police sided with him, putting the woman behind bars.

The accused also passed lewd remarks against her. Angered at this bizarre behavior, the woman and a kin of her's thrashed the accused, following which the court employee filed a case of thrashing, obstructing public servant in discharge of public funtion under Sections 186 , 353, 379 , and theft at the Basti Jodhewal police station.

The police arrested the woman and resgistered a case against her when she went to t h e p o l i ce station on Wednesday, despite her pleas and protestations.

The woman was put behind bars despite her telling the police that she was in possession of a CCTV footage in which the court employee could be allegedly seen molesting her.

On Thursday the kin of the woman and the residents of the area expressed their resentment at the apparently brash police action. The relatives of the woman produced the CCTV footage before the court on Thursday, and also staged a protest before the Basti Jodhewal police station, raising slogans against police atrocity.

Later, inspector station house officer (SHO) Balwinder Singh assured the people that the police would take appropriate action against the bailiff for molesting the woman.

According to victim's husband Satpal, the couple had taken a loan of 1.5 lakh from a finance company. As they failed to file some installments of the loan, the company filed a case against them in court. Accused Karamjit Singh, bailiff of the court, was visiting their house in Kailash Nagar for the last three days.

Satpal alleged that Karamjit passed lewd remarks against his wife, Veena, and daughters. When Veena resented, karamjit threatened her of police action.

On Wednesday the accused barged into the victim's house and molested her. She raised the alarm.

Satpal said his family is reputed in the area and angered at the deeds of the accused, the people thrashed him. Karamjit filed a police complaint against them later and the police registered a case without verifying the matter. Satpal accused the police of having turned a deaf ear to the pleas of his wife.

Varinder Sehgal, Congress councillor from ward number 3, said if the police did not take action against the accused, they would step up the ante.
