SBM-II: New focus on waste management

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pet programme Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) Grameen (Clean Indian Mission-Rural) has entered the second phase with the Union Cabinet setting new goals of Open Defecation Free (ODF) Plus, bringing Solid and Liquid Waste Management (SLWM) under its charter. The second phase will last till 2024-25.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said the mission will also ensure that no one is left behind and everyone uses a toilet in India.

SBM-G Phase-II will also be implemented in a mission mode with a total estimated budgeted financial implication of INR 52,497 crore (around USD 710 million) for the period from 2020-21 to 2024-25, including both the central and state shares.
