“Delhi is a poetry personified,” says poet Yaseen Anwar

-

In dinon garche dakan mai hai bari qadr e sukhan Kaun jaye "zauq" par dilli ki galiyan chor kar” ~ Ibrahim Zauq’s irresistible passion for Delhi in the above lines illustrates the charisma of this city, the spell of which can mesmerise anyone. Delhi, the regal land of several monarchs, is poetry personified. The world says that the uncanny aura of this land can give heebie-jeebies to any common layman, but for a poet, this majestic city is the perfect epitome of some poetic paradise. From ghazal artists and Bollywood minstrels to poets of several dialects and languages, the capital city of India is bejeweled with rhymesters of every kind. Every imperial and archaic structure of this land, no matter whether it is a Mughal or a British edifice, murmurs a lament in verse. Delhi is the motherland land of myriads of poets, namely Ghalib, Mir, Khusrau, Rahim, Zauq and many more who have bestowed on this city the stunning traditions of lyrical poetry over the centuries. Amir Khusrau, an unrivaled poetic laureate is considered as father of “Qawwali" (a devotional music form of the Sufis) in the subcontinent. Another legend, Mir Taqi Mir, was one of the principal poets of the Delhi and remains the leading name in Urdu poetry. Delhi embraces its each and every visitor with open arms without giving any second thought. And that is why, an unfailing attempt to revive the opulent history of Delhi was made recently by our group, named as Poets Corner. Several poets from distinct corners of India and abroad are active members of Poets Corner. A four day literary carnival, termed as the Delhi Poetry Festival—Season II was organised with participants from all over the globe. Poets of several languages gathered around the Purana Qila and were then taken to Purana Qila, Lodhi Gardens and Bara Lau ka Gumbad to recite poetry, the essence of which reverberated through each vault and dome smeared by the presence of numerous eloquent poets. The author is the founder and managing editor of Poets Corner Group
