Can heavy handbags be bad for health?

-

How should I carry my bag to minimise the strain it puts on my shoulders and back?

monica kohli, mumbai I suggest wearing a strap that is long enough to place over the head resting on the opposite side of your handbag. This can help to distribute the weight more evenly. Also, try to put the bulk of the bag weight towards the centre of the body, perhaps in front of your body. The strap should rest close to the neck. Completely avoid a heavy bag worn over one shoulder. If you must use a bag with a single strap, make sure the strap is padded and wide.

At the end of most days, I find myself with a terribly stiff neck. Could my handbag be causing this stiffness and uneasiness?

rachna khanna, delhi Yes, absolutely. Carrying that heavy handbag can cause the trapezius muscle, which sits on top of your shoulders, to spasm and therefore tighten, along with the muscles that go from your shoulder to the base of your neck. When that happens, it can cause a lot of stiffness in the upper back, the shoulder area and the neck. It can also cause a decreased curve in the neck, which is known as military neck.

What tips would you give to help reduce daily damage caused by the handbags we carry?

rashmi kapse, delhi Firstly, and most importantly, reduce the weight of your bag. The rule of thumb is to never carry more than 10 per cent of your body weight, but I recommend not exceeding five per cent with handbags. And you may be carrying more than you realise. It’s also important to make sure that the bag itself isn’t too heavy; many of the accoutrements of designer bags, such as studs and big zippers, add unnecessary weight. Secondly, opt for bags with wider straps, or if possible bags with alternative strap options. Thirdly, switch your handbag to the opposite shoulder every 10 to 15 minutes while walking so that you balance the way your body carries the weight and your muscles develop equally. And finally, do not text excessively while carrying your bag.
