FUN WITH FOOD

- By Malini Banerjee

If you are getting tired of good old Kolkata style Chinese on offer, there’s a new “fun Asian” dine den to drop by in Kolkata. Azure Hospitality’s Mamagoto has opened in Magma House, right next to Barbeque Nation on Park Street.

The 50-seater restaurant is spread out over two storeys, with its trademark decor of Japanese manga inspired art work covering exposed brick finish walls. The vibe is fun and colourful and the music quite loud so it may not make the best place for a long chatty lunch with your friends.

But the food is quite good, so you may not want to chat anyway. We started our meal with an ice cold cucumber mint mocktail which refreshing on a hot day though a bad idea when the mercury dips low. For starters we tried the Hot basil Chicken Cups. Though supposed to be spicy, we found it to be fairly mild. Next up, Cheese and Truffle Dumplings. Warm creamy cheese with the thinnest of coating, it was one dish we wished that served more to go around. The Snow Pea and Green Bean Salad too was surprisingly delicious and it’s a dish worth ordering even your table is full of hard core carnivores. Laced with coconut milk, tamarind and sugar, its tangy sweet crunch is worth savouring over every bite. For desserts we tried the Homemade American Style Chunky Caramel Sponge Cake with toffee sauce that was served warm with vanilla ice-cream. It made for the perfect sweet ending.

MEAL FOR TWO Rs 2,000 AT Mamagoto, 24, Park Street, Annex Building, Magma House Complex.
