Presidency University, a liberal arts university in Kolkata known for its science and arts programme was founded in 1817 as Hindu College and renamed as Presidency College in 1855. The college was conferred university status in July 2010, and became Presidency University. The university offers courses in over 16 discipline­s including botany, biochemist­ry, biotechnol­ogy, molecular biology and genetics, physiology and zoology. “Each department has a history of having hosted and being headed by famous academics that it’s nearly impossible to mention one over another,” says Anuradha Lohia, Vice-chancellor. “From Swami Vivekanand­a teaching philosophy to Henry Louis Vivian Derozio having taught English and history to Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray who went on to found Bengal Chemicals, the first chemical industry in India, and Jagadish Chandra Bose who taught physics, it is difficult to say which department or course has an edge over the other,” she adds. › Popular courses Physics, chemistry, botany, zoology and molecular biology
