On In­ter­na­tional Mi­grants Day, in mid-De­cem­ber, a bi­en­nial UN re­port showed that while mi­grants are only a small per­cent­age of the global pop­u­la­tion, taken to­gether, they form the fifth most pop­u­lous na­tion in the world. In­di­ans make up, by a sig­nif­i­cant mar­gin, the largest group of in­ter­na­tional mi­grants. Half of all In­dian mi­grants move to tiny, wealthy petro­c­ra­cies of the Ara­bian Gulf. Mean­while, on De­cem­ber 31, the UN re­ported a sub­stan­tial re­duc­tion in the num­ber of Bangladesh­i mi­grants liv­ing in In­dia.
