Laughing is Dangerous
It was funny while it lasted. Last week, the administrator of Facebook parody, Humans of Hindutva, felt compelled to delete the page. He had received death threats that had left him “scared for his wife and children”, tweeted his friend Jairaj Singh, an editor at the India Today Group’s opinion site DailyO. Started in April, Humans of Hindutva relished in the ridiculous—in showing up the paranoid viciousness of so much Hindu supremacist ‘thought’. Those, including journalists, who found the page biased against Hindus argued that the administrator had not been bullied off Facebook but shut down for hate speech. The administrator briefly resurrected the page to show he had not been banned.
