National Security Advisor Ajit Doval’s vice-like grip on the three central intelligence agencies is widely acknowledged. What is less well known is the influence the former Intelligence Bureau chief seems to wield in the choice of the Mumbai police commissioner. On June 30, Subodh Jaiswal became the third consecutive police commissioner, after Ahmed Javed and Dattatray Padsalgikar, to have a Doval endorsement. The common thread, of course, is the intelligence services. Both Padsalgikar and Jaiswal have had long stints in the IB and R&AW and, in fact, opted out of the race to head these spy agencies.
