Na­tional Se­cu­rity Ad­vi­sor Ajit Doval’s vice-like grip on the three cen­tral in­tel­li­gence agen­cies is widely ac­knowl­edged. What is less well known is the in­flu­ence the for­mer In­tel­li­gence Bureau chief seems to wield in the choice of the Mum­bai po­lice com­mis­sioner. On June 30, Su­bodh Jaiswal be­came the third con­sec­u­tive po­lice com­mis­sioner, af­ter Ahmed Javed and Dat­ta­tray Pad­sal­gikar, to have a Doval en­dorse­ment. The com­mon thread, of course, is the in­tel­li­gence ser­vices. Both Pad­sal­gikar and Jaiswal have had long stints in the IB and R&AW and, in fact, opted out of the race to head these spy agen­cies.
