The de­mand of the West Ben­gal unit of the BJP to in­stal a pub­lic statue of for­mer prime min­is­ter Atal Bi­hari Va­j­payee is giv­ing the Tri­namool Con­gress-run Kolkata Mu­nic­i­pal Cor­po­ra­tion the jit­ters. KMC says it is space-starved and has a huge back­log of stat­ues in its godowns. Pri­ori­tis­ing Va­j­payee’s statue would also raise fears of a se­cret TMC-BJP friend­ship. The KMC has rolled the ball into the BJP court—it will con­sider the re­quest if the party buys the land for the statue. No word from the BJP yet.
