ROYA L REDUX

Designed from scratch, inspired by regal Rajasthani decor, while giving it a contemporary context, adds to the grandeur, scale and magnificence of this hotel in Jaipur

- By CHUMKI BHARADWAJ

UNMISTAKABLE AND EQUALLY UNMISSABLE, the JW Marriott Jaipur Resort & Spa, swaddled in pristine white, is an effortless punctuation to the brown, stubbly hump of the surrounding Aravalis. While the all-white affair can be blinding in the roasting summer sun, evenings are better placed to enjoy its paler reflection in the scattered water bodies that dot the property. The night is when the hotel is a real sell-out with the ivory walls aglow in the multiple coloured lights that light the way. Opulence and glamour are the inspired motifs of this hotel, taking cue from the romance of Rajasthan’s royal past. Designed to allow guests the privilege of a peek into regal living and design, the lobby—both walls and ceilings—is adorned with craftsmanship of local artisans. The traditional jaali work gives the added illusion of space while the intricate marble inlay and tikri, patterned mirror

work, celebrate this region’s traditional craft. The property is interspersed with water bodies, starting with the ornate fountain in the lobby. While the spacious rooms and suites are more minimalist with earthy linens and white interiors, each of the dining spaces is designed to create a unique experience.

Architecturally inspired from the Sheesh Mahal at Amer Fort in Jaipur, the specialty Indian restaurant, Mohan Mahal, offers great food, by candlelight. While the design of Sukh Mahal, captures the spirit of ‘all-day dining’ with a kaleidoscopic aesthetic apportioned in a three-colour-tone for the interiors: fresh morning, bronze noon and warm evening. After all, it’s only the burnt orange of the twilight hours that truly resonate with the letter and spirit of royal pursuits.
