COMFORTING PLATTERS

- By Amolak Singh

Chandigarh has always had a special equation with corner cafés that offer informality, light food and fantastic desserts. A remarkable new entrant, which opened recently and is winning hearts from across age groups is Downtown Café & Bakery, located in the bustling heart of Sector 21.

Seemingly inspired by accustomed establishments of the city that offer a domestic patisserie experience to patrons, Downtown welcomes you with a simple but effective display of baked goodies before you even enter inside. Inside is all about pastels that gleam across in shades of cyan, golden and bronze. Well, even bulb holders hanging from the ceiling are painted in gorgeous hues of gold. Splashed across one wall is graffiti that resonates with the name, and across from there are pop-culture clippings framed elegantly that continue the echo from the graffiti. A nice touch to the architecture is an L-shaped standing counter with high chairs in case you don't want a table or if you just prefer to have a quick bite while standing there. The delight goes beyond visual pops and an overall sensory experience can be expected thanks to a diverse menu that comes with well-plated dishes submitting olfactory pleasures and epicurean enchantment.

Bite into their popular cheese pizza and it’s all about a crispy thin crust and fresh tasting toppings. In fact, comfort cuisine that stems from diner-inspired cafes is what Downtown does best. But don’t forget the baked treats—from your everyday stuffed puff pastry to exquisite cakes. Everything is made fresh and will surely bring a smile on your face. MEAL FOR TWO
