Leather Love
Devina Juneja
Leather is a medium that designer Devina Juneja, 34, fell in love with after “marrying a tanner”. Working in the leather industry inspired her to start her own accessories label titled Suede by Devina Juneja in 2012, and in 2018, she started her eponymous label for apparel as well. “I think we are all still a little hung up on branded leather bags. I was also keen to create apparel using leather,” says Juneja talking about her new apparel brand.
Juneja's leather apparel is not just about biker jackets but leather as appliqués and embellishments. She first started with a line of shawls and stoles with leather embellishments and for this season, her line is all about easy to layer pieces like kimonos, jackets and trench coats. Most of them can be worn as outer layers pieces or as dresses or tunics. For example the blue wool trench coat that Devina wears as a layer could easily worn as a wrap dress.
The colours for this season are navy, olive, grey with some on pops of mustard. In terms of other fabrics, she’s used wool, organza, net or tulle and crepe. Each garment goes through a considerable number of processes before it is ready. Leather pieces are either diecut or laser-cut, then hand painted or shaded and rivets or chain links and zips seen then attached to fabrics often with “hardware” she would use in her bags and only then is the fabric ready to be cut and put together as an outfit. Small on bags add texture to the garment.
