Bridging the Past
Two bags from Italian luxury brand Bottega Veneta’s new creative director, Daniel Lee, offer an easy transition to the future
TRUE TO IT’S ESSENCE that true style never shouts, luxury brand Bottega Veneta has recently introduced two bags for the S/S’19 collection by Daniel Lee, the new creative director at the luxury marque. A transitional collection between former creative director Tomas Maier and Lee, The Pouch, represents Lee’s first two designs for the brand. They play on the sensual physicality of identity and legacy leading from the front wearing respect for craftsmanship, natural materials and its Italian heritage as proud epaulettes. Woven together, these ideas define a distinct but discreet brand of contemporary luxury that belongs as much to the past as it weighs in on the future.
The oversized clutch features soft folds of leather which completely envelop the rigid frame to create a voluminous, rounded form. The Pouch is available in three different types of craftsmanship and a palette that include both natural shades and is saturated with pop colours. While the Velvet Calf Intrecciato Pouch presents Bottega’s signature intrecciato weave in extra soft calf, The Butter Calf Pouch features panels of smooth leather, while the Cocco Souple version is comprises four skins that are carefully crafted to achieve a continuity of the scales. The Pouch is available in a smaller version, called The Pouch 20 after the measurement of its length. This style is offered in Velvet Calf Intrecciato, Butter Calf and Cocco Souple. This exceptional small but distinct leather accessory can be easily carried as an elegant mini clutch, to be held under the arm or by hand, and even works as a functional bag to organise small essentials. Often times, the best things come in small sizes. And in this case the familiar shows up with a surprising twist of whimsy.
