YOGA DIPLOMACY

India Today - - UPFRONT -

The latest Chinese incursion into Indian territory was a show of friendship and goodwill, with 70 soldiers and 30 civilians participating in yoga sessions in border towns in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh alongside their Indian counterparts—a change from petty border scuffles. The gesture was warmly received by India, with an army spokesman saying it would “go a long way in promoting peace and tranquility along the borders”. The joint exercise was among the highlights (alongside some asana-savvy dogs) of the fifth international yoga day, celebrated around the world on June 21. As for petty scuffles, Congress president Rahul Gandhi posted a photo of the yogi-doggies and their handlers, captioning it “New India” with his eyebrow metaphorically (and perhaps literally) raised. In response, a Mumbai-based lawyer went to the police, seeking to file an FIR. Now would be a good time to say something about yoga and taking deep breaths.
