The Azamgarh Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh has been a hard nut for the BJP to crack. In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav won the seat. In the 2017 state assembly election, the BJP lost all five assembly segments in the constituency. In 2019, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav won despite extensive campaigning by chief minister Yogi Adityanath, who refuses to give up on the constituency. He has chosen Azamgarh to begin holding a review meeting on development projects and the law and order situation and has asked police for a list of the district’s top 10 criminals.
