The BJP’s West Bengal unit may soon observe Martyr’s Day to counter the TMC’s Shaheed Diwas. Observed on July 21, it began as a day to commemorate 13 Youth Congress workers who died in police firing in 1993 during a protest march to the Writers’ Building. In recent times, it had become a platform to overthrow the Modi government. Expressing strong objection, BJP leader Mukul Roy wanted Shaheed Diwas to commemorate the death of the BJP workers who lost their lives at the hands of the TMC. His suggestion to designate July 21 itself as this day was rejected by the BJP’s national leadership. As it is, Roy is seen to have introduced the TMC brand of politics to take on his former party. He has been told that the BJP will find other ways to honour the workers who died.
