THE SHORTAGE OF TEACHERS

India Today - - UPFRONT -

A recent government report highlights India’s teacher shortages at the higher levels compared with fellow BRICS nations such as Brazil and China. Consequently overburdened by their teaching load, teachers in India are ‘unable to pursue any research or encourage their students to do so’, notes the report titled ‘Education Quality Upgradation and Inclusion Programme’. An HRD ministry survey also shows that while enrolments increased in higher education institutes between 2014 and 2018, the numbers of teachers have actually gone down. The draft National Education Policy points out that ‘thousands of smaller colleges have hardly any teaching faculty, and there is little or no education taking place’.
