IN SOME STATES, INCLUDING UTTAR PRADESH, A WRONG PRACTICE OF FORCING PEOPLE TO CHANT RELIGIOUS SLOGANS AND COMMITTING ATROCITIES HAS BEGUN, AND IT SHOULD BE CONDEMNED... THE CENTRE AND STATE GOVERNMENTS MUST TAKE TOUGH ACTION SO THAT HARMONY IS MAINTAINED EVERYWHERE AND DEVELOPMENT IS NOT AFFECTED

Former UP chief minister MAYAWATI hit out on social media at a gang of 12 young men who allegedly forced a Muslim cleric, a resident of Muzaffarnagar, to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’. They also beat him up and pulled his beard, he told the police. This is not the first time Mayawati has complained about the ruling party “allowing crimes of communal frenzy and casteism” and defaming the country and embarrassing the prime minister. The BJP responded with scorn, some in the party likening Mayawati to the West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee who has denounced the chanting of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ in her state as un-Bengali, the actions and language of “outsiders”
