Location Juhu Beach, Mumbai Area 350 sq ft

Special Features

It has an almost lantern-like effect and proportion in a large floor plate of the house. A delicate wooden lattice screen is used along one edge to ensure privacy while allowing the light to come in. The biggest reason for the courtyard was to bring in natural light into an otherwise dark basement that would have had to function as a completely artificially controlled environment. It also offers a garden like relief at the centre of the basement.

Challenges Faced

This was cut out into an existing basement structure when we did gut renovation/ revamp of the entire existing house. The house was right on the sea and hence making such a big cut out in the basement without damaging the integrity of the structure was a definite challenge.

Quick Tip

Always plan multi-functional ambulatory areas around the courtyard for maximum utilisation of space.
