On August 22, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) grilled Raj Thackeray for over eight hours about an alleged case of money laundering. This led to the state opposition rallying behind the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president, terming the interrogation a political vendetta. But highly-placed sources insist the ED found suspicious transactions by the MNS leader’s real estate firm, Matoshree Infrastructure. The firm allegedly sold some flats ‘on paper’ and then repurchased them at a higher value. The source claims Rs 78 crore was credited to Thackeray’s account after this sale and repurchase. Thackeray has kept mum so far, and with state elections just two months away, the BJP might like him to stay that way.
