These days, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee frequently breaks her VIP cordon to play the ‘aam aurat (common woman)’—with cameras watching, of course. At a work-cum-break trip to Digha, she stopped at a roadside tea stall to make tea. When the cameras aren’t around, she turns raconteur—she recently told a meeting of officials how she’d personally cleaned a stretch of Digha beach strewn with plastic waste. The BJP calls her actions a vote-catching political gimmick. The party perhaps thinks chai pe charcha is a BJP exclusive.
