A comprehensive report on the status of policing in India was released on August 27 by Common Cause and the Lokniti programme for the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS). It includes a section on the opinions police personnel hold about their fellow Indians. Working conditions for the police, the report shows, are less than ideal, with large gaps in equipment and training. The police also lack diversity and full representation. But police in India do also put up with political interference, “inhuman duty hours” and stress caused by chronic understaffing, finds the report.
