TO CATCH A CHIEF

India Today - - UPFRONT -

The CBI is tearing Kolkata down in its hunt for former city police commissioner Rajeev Kumar. The officer is wanted in connection with the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam, in which the CBI believes he tampered with evidence. Agency sleuths have scanned resorts, luxury hotels, police guesthouses, private suites and nursing homes in search of the elusive IPS officer. His security personnel, travel agents, wife and driver, too, have been grilled, but Kumar continues to dodge them. The CBI believes Kumar is still in West Bengal—the anticipatory bail petitions submitted in various courts in the state bear his signature. Kumar enjoys the support of the state machinery, claims the agency. That explains a lot.
